ABOUT THE BAY AREA ALUMNAE COLLECTIVE

OUR HERSTORY

The presence of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has been felt in California for more than two decades, with the establishment of Phi Chapter at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, back in Fall of 2003. Fast forwarding to 10 years later, the organization further expanded to the University of California Berkeley, with the establishment of the Beta Mu Chapter. After the Beta Mu chapter went dormant,  there was no established entity in the Bay Area that would continue supporting the organization at large and sisters who were residing and continue to reside in the area.

In the Spring of 2022, Regional Vice President for Region 10, Josey Alvarez, who became a sister in Spring 2014, at the Beta Mu Chapter at UC Berkeley, began hosting various Town Hall Meetings for sisters in the Bay Area, who were interested in having an entity in the region, to further learn about the requirements to establish an entity. After the last Town Hall Meeting various sisters from different chapters in California began developing and finalizing requirements such as the Statement of Intent to begin the journey in establishing a collective in the area. In Spring of 2023, sisters Jessica Guevara, Phi Chapter, Spring 2010, Sureyma Gonzalez, Beta Mu Chapter, Spring 14, Sharon Herrera, Beta Mu Chapter, Spring 16, Camila A. Moreno-Jiménez, Beta Mu Chapter, Spring 17, and Yaneiry Barrios, Alpha Mu Chapter, Summer 2021, completed the Bay Area Alumnae Collective Charter Packet to establish the Bay Area Alumnae Collective.

On Saturday, March 18, 2023, the aforementioned sisters planned and executed a Founders’ Day Brunch Celebration, where sisters residing in the Bay Area were welcomed to celebrate 34 years of sisterhood. The event was not only a celebration, but also an opportunity for sisters to meet, connect, reignite interest and support.

On March 20, 2023, the establishment of the Bay Area Alumnae Collective was approved by National Council and Board of Trustees. The news of a newly established collective in the Bay Area was later announced to the membership at large and the public on April 14, 2023.

Since the approval of the establishment of the collective and the public announcement, members of the Bay Area Alumnae Collective have engaged in a Collective Orientation, and have met for their first Collective meeting, where the Executive Board was determined. Yaneiry Barrios was voted in as the Bay Area Alumnae Collective’s Herstorian.
